Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS), haul trucks that navigate pits, load, and dump without a driver in the cab, have moved from experimental pilots to industrial standard. Two OEMs, Komatsu and Caterpillar, together account for roughly 74% of tracked autonomous truck brands globally. Komatsu's FrontRunner system, first deployed commercially in 2008, has now moved more than 11.5 billion tonnes of material and in April 2026 became the first platform to commission its 1,000th autonomous ultra-class haul truck. Caterpillar, which entered commercial AHS deployment in 2013, had 690 autonomous trucks running by the end of 2024 and has stated an ambition to triple that fleet past 2,000 trucks by 2030.
The business case is measurable rather than speculative. Autonomous truck operation within its design envelope delivers an average 40% improvement in tyre and brake life and a 13% reduction in overall maintenance, according to Komatsu. A conventional 24/7 haul truck typically needs five operators to cover shifts; a FrontRunner fleet needs a single controller per shift to supervise the entire fleet, a structural shift in workforce composition rather than a simple headcount cut
For African mining, the opportunity is sharpening rather than distant. Large open-pit operations — copper in Zambia and the DRC, gold in Ghana, Tanzania and Mali, iron ore in Guinea, face exactly the conditions AHS is built for: remote sites, high logistics costs, rising labour costs relative to output, and mounting investor pressure on safety and ESG performance. Early movers are already visible: Resolute Mining's Syama mine in Mali is advancing toward becoming the world's first fully autonomous underground gold mine, while South Africa's platinum sector has invested roughly R15 billion in electric mining equipment between 2024 and 2026, with 70% of new platinum projects incorporating autonomous systems from the outset
Adoption still faces real constraints, communications infrastructure, capital intensity, skills gaps, and mixed/legacy fleets chief among them.
