TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya has completed a comprehensive overhaul of its petroleum transport fleet, introducing 161 new heavy commercial vehicles that meet the latest safety and environmental standards in a significant step towards cleaner and safer fuel logistics.
The nationwide fleet replacement forms part of the company’s broader energy transition agenda and is expected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 3.7 kilotonnes annually, reinforcing Kenya’s efforts to advance climate action and sustainable transport solutions.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the modernization programme has delivered substantial operational efficiencies. TotalEnergies says the new fleet has reduced fuel consumption from 5.8 litres per kilometre to 3.5 litres per kilometre, lowering both operating costs and emissions while enhancing the sustainability of fuel distribution across the country.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Petroleum, Kello Harsama, underscored the importance of collective action in ensuring the safe movement of petroleum products.
“The transportation and handling of petroleum products require a shared commitment from all industry stakeholders. Safety must remain central throughout the entire value chain, from storage and transportation to final delivery. The ministry is committed to strengthening compliance, encouraging innovation, and fostering collaboration to safeguard lives, infrastructure, and the environment,” Harsama said.
The newly deployed trucks have been fitted with a range of advanced safety technologies designed to comply with Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) KS 2295:2018 requirements. These include calibrated speed governors, driver assistance systems, and real-time alert mechanisms aimed at promoting safer driving practices and reducing road accidents.
In addition, the vehicles are equipped with artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems capable of detecting signs of driver fatigue or distraction. The systems automatically relay alerts to a centralized operations centre, enabling immediate intervention where necessary.
Other safety enhancements include dual in-cabin cameras, certified steel underride protection systems, and high-visibility retro-reflective markings to improve vehicle visibility, particularly during night operations.
TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya Managing Director Thibault Flichy described the complete fleet renewal as a landmark investment in the company’s sustainability and innovation journey.
“The upgraded fleet incorporates dual interior cameras and AI-enabled monitoring technologies that identify driver fatigue and distraction, instantly alerting our central monitoring team for rapid response. The vehicles also feature certified steel underride barriers and high-visibility reflective markings to enhance safety for all road users,” said Flichy.
According to the company, the investment will not only strengthen the reliability of fuel supply across Kenya but also demonstrate that environmental stewardship, stringent safety standards, and operational efficiency can coexist within the country’s petroleum transport sector.
