Toyota previews new Hilux, first EV and Land Cruiser FJ for South Africa

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) recently  unveiled an ambitious product offensive aimed at strengthening its position in one of Africa’s most competitive automotive markets. During the inaugural Toyota Matsuri festival at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, the company offered a first look at four significant models set to arrive on local roads, including an updated Hilux, the all-new RAV4, Toyota’s first fully electric vehicle for South Africa, the bZ4X, and the highly anticipated Land Cruiser FJ.

The showcase comes at a time when South Africa’s vehicle market is becoming increasingly crowded, particularly in the SUV and lifestyle vehicle segments where new entrants, especially from China, continue to gain ground. Toyota’s response is a broad portfolio that spans conventional internal combustion engines, hybrid technology, plug-in hybrid systems and battery electric vehicles.

According to Leon Theron, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors, expanding the company’s footprint in the D-SUV segment is a strategic priority. The new product introductions are designed to ensure Toyota remains relevant across multiple customer segments while responding to changing consumer expectations.

Among the most closely watched arrivals is the updated Hilux, a model that has long been one of South Africa’s best-selling vehicles. While retaining its proven 2.8-litre GD diesel engine, the latest version introduces a more refined driving experience. Early impressions from test drives at Kyalami indicate lighter steering, improved ride comfort and a more modern cabin environment. Externally, the vehicle adopts contemporary Toyota styling cues, including a prominent honeycomb grille and a refreshed front-end design.

Toyota also used the event to preview the latest generation RAV4, one of the world’s best-selling SUVs. The new model will be available with a range of powertrain options, including petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, reflecting the company’s commitment to providing customers with multiple pathways toward lower-emission mobility. A performance-inspired GR-S Hybrid derivative further broadens the lineup.

Pricing for the new RAV4 range starts at R770,500 for the RAV4 2.5 HEV GX. The RAV4 2.0 VX is priced at R799,900, while the RAV4 2.5 HEV VX and RAV4 2.5 HEV GR-S are priced at R927,800 and R941,800 respectively. Pricing for the plug-in hybrid version will be announced closer to launch.

A milestone moment for Toyota South Africa is the introduction of the bZ4X, the company’s first battery electric vehicle in the local market. Equipped with a 73.1kWh lithium-ion battery, the all-wheel-drive SUV offers an estimated driving range of between 450km and 480km. Its dual-motor system delivers 255.3kW of power, providing the instant torque and acceleration expected from modern electric vehicles. Demonstrations at Kyalami highlighted not only its rapid acceleration but also its agility through handling exercises designed to showcase the vehicle’s dynamic capabilities.

The bZ4X enters the market at a price of R1,182,800 and represents an important step in Toyota’s broader electrification strategy for South Africa and the wider African continent.

Perhaps the vehicle generating the greatest excitement among enthusiasts is the Land Cruiser FJ. Designed as a compact off-roader, the new model combines rugged capability with a more accessible size and price point than larger Land Cruiser variants. Early off-road demonstrations showed promising performance on steep inclines and uneven terrain, suggesting the vehicle retains the core attributes that have made the Land Cruiser name synonymous with durability and adventure.

The Land Cruiser FJ range will start at R714,000 for the 4×4 6AT GX model, while the higher-specification 4×4 6AT VX is priced at R761,400.

Collectively, these launches highlight Toyota’s determination to maintain its market leadership by offering solutions across a broad spectrum of customer needs. From the workhorse appeal of the Hilux and the family-focused versatility of the RAV4 to the electrified future represented by the bZ4X and the adventure credentials of the Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota is positioning itself to compete aggressively in a market that is evolving faster than ever before.

The strategy is not simply about introducing new models. It reflects a broader effort to provide South African consumers with greater choice as mobility preferences continue to diversify, ensuring the brand remains relevant whether customers are seeking traditional reliability, improved efficiency, electrification or off-road capability.
