Stellantis, one of the world’s largest automotive groups formed through the merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, continues to reshape its technical standards across Europe. With a portfolio of 14 brands including Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Vauxhall, Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Dodge, Chrysler, RAM, Lancia, DS Automobiles, and Abarth, the group has introduced a significant update to its lubricant requirements under the new FPW9.55535/XX specifications, effective 1 January 2026.
This new framework replaces close to forty legacy lubricant specifications inherited from PSA, FCA, and Opel Vauxhall, consolidating them into six unified standards. The objective is to simplify maintenance across the Stellantis network while raising the performance bar for engine lubricants, particularly in areas such as durability, fuel efficiency, and resistance to extreme thermal conditions.
Alongside this consolidation, Stellantis has also redesigned its lubricant testing and approval methodology. The updated process introduces a more demanding validation regime aligned with the expectations of its multi-brand engineering ecosystem. It is widely viewed as one of the most rigorous lubricant approval systems currently in place in the automotive industry.
Within this evolving technical landscape, TotalEnergies anticipated the shift early. Working closely with Stellantis engineering teams, the company’s R&D and testing divisions co-developed a new generation of lubricants specifically engineered for compliance with the FPW standards. The collaboration enabled performance levels that meet, and in several cases exceed, the newly defined requirements.
As a result, TotalEnergies has positioned itself as the only supplier currently offering a complete range of six officially approved lubricants covering the full spectrum of Stellantis passenger vehicle applications across Europe.
