Tanzania’s push toward green mobility is accelerating, marked by the introduction of the country’s first electric dual-cab pickup trucks; an early signal of how Chinese EV technology and local partnerships are reshaping the transport landscape.
Dar es Salaam is emerging as the focal point of this shift, where Tanzanian mobility firm Jenga Taifa Pamoja Auto Limited (JTP Auto) has partnered with established Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers to bring in affordable, commercially oriented EVs designed for local operating conditions.
According to JTP Auto founder and CEO Amar Shangavi, the decision to work with Chinese OEMs was driven by their global scale and leadership in electric mobility, as well as the flexibility to adapt vehicles for African markets.
He noted that collaboration with Chinese manufacturers enables the company to localize vehicle specifications while leveraging mature production ecosystems already operating at industrial scale.
While the vehicles are sourced through international supply chains, Shangavi emphasized that the company remains majority Tanzanian-owned and is intentionally focused on building domestic technical capability. Plans are already underway to establish local EV assembly operations within the next two years, in collaboration with the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, with the goal of strengthening skills transfer and engineering capacity within the country.
“Our long-term objective is not just to import vehicles, but to build a full ecosystem here at home,” Shangavi explained. “That includes skills development, local assembly, and ensuring Tanzanians are central to this transition.”
The initial rollout targets commercial and fleet operators, a segment considered most receptive to EV adoption due to clear operational cost advantages.
Company data indicates that electric vehicles can reduce running costs by as much as 80%–85% per kilometre compared to petrol-powered alternatives. In practical terms, while internal combustion vehicles in Tanzania may cost significantly more in fuel per kilometre, EVs operate at a fraction of that cost due to much lower electricity expenses.
“These vehicles are built for real-world commercial use in Tanzania—reliable, cost-efficient, and suitable for fleet operations where savings are immediately measurable,” Shangavi added.
Early adoption is already taking shape through Smiles Rent-A-Car Services Limited, the first partner operating the electric pickup fleet. The company’s operations manager, Kassim Mbilinga, said his exposure to electric mobility models abroad helped shape confidence in their commercial viability.
The company has already begun installing charging infrastructure at its Dar es Salaam premises, positioning itself for wider fleet expansion as supporting infrastructure develops.
To address range anxiety and charging limitations, JTP Auto is also investing in fast-charging infrastructure. The company is finalizing plans to deploy two 120-kilowatt public charging stations in Dar es Salaam, which will serve as early backbone infrastructure for urban EV adoption.
Looking ahead, the charging network is expected to extend into key transport and logistics corridors, including Chalinze, Bagamoyo, Tanga, Arusha, Dodoma, and Iringa—an expansion intended to support long-distance electric travel and commercial fleet movement across the country.
Government positioning has also played a supportive role, with policy direction increasingly aligned toward clean energy adoption, local manufacturing, and reduced dependence on imported fuel. Analysts note that wider EV uptake could help ease foreign exchange pressure from fuel imports while strengthening domestic energy consumption through the national grid.
Beyond economic benefits, the shift is expected to contribute to lower urban emissions and improved air quality, particularly in rapidly growing cities like Dar es Salaam. It also reflects a broader continental trend, as African markets begin to test scalable pathways toward electrified transport systems.
For early adopters like Mbilinga, the transition is less about disruption and more about inevitability.
“Electric mobility is not a distant concept anymore,” he said. “It is already here, and it represents the next phase of transport evolution.”
